Understanding our emotions and understanding how we are really feeling and identifying what it is that we are feeling is key to achieving wellbeing and developing good skills for communication and relating to others. Accepting and allowing our emotions can be one of the most challenging aspects to being a human. Growing up, cultural, societal and family systems often teach us to restrict, restrain or reject certain emotions, leading to maladaptive defense mechanisms and shame. Archaic coping strategies and self-criticism can end up causing more harm than benefit in our adult lives, to ourselves and others. Research evidence clearly indicates that learning to identify and process emotions with compassion is directly correlated to higher sense of wellbeing and peace.
